Overview
Austria sits where the trade routes of Europe crossed, and every valley that mattered has a castle guarding it. The Austrian Castle Route is our multi-day private tour of the best of them: fortresses on rocks above the Salzach and the Drava, Renaissance palaces in the Tyrol, Styrian strongholds that held off the Ottomans, and castle hotels where you sleep inside the story. Your own driver-guide, a glass-roof vehicle, and an itinerary shaped around your interests and your dates.
What an Austria castle tour with us looks like
Each castle has its own history, and together they tell one: how the archbishops of Salzburg, the Habsburgs and the great families of Styria and Carinthia built, besieged, lost and rebuilt their way through a thousand years. On the road we talk about how and why these fortresses were built, who lived in them, how they are kept alive today, and the tensions between church, family, power and region that shaped them. You will come away understanding the connections, right up to the present day.
Castles and fortresses on the route
- Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg: the largest fully preserved fortress in central Europe, where the tour begins.
- Hohenwerfen Castle, Werfen: the archbishops' stronghold in the Salzach valley, with its falconry show.
- Burg Clam, Upper Austria: a medieval castle still lived in by the same family since 1454.
- Castles around Vienna: the Danube fortresses and country seats within reach of the capital.
- Riegersburg, Styria: the volcanic-rock fortress that was never taken, above the vineyards of the south-east.
- Deutschlandsberg, Styria: the castle and the fortress above the Schilcher wine country.
- Gabelhofen, Styria: a moated Renaissance castle, today a castle hotel.
- Hochosterwitz, Carinthia: the castle on the rock with fourteen fortified gates on the road to the top.
- Tratzberg, Tyrol: a Renaissance castle with its original interiors intact.
- Ambras, Innsbruck: Archduke Ferdinand II's palace and the oldest museum collection in the world.
This is our proposed route. It spans several days and is adapted to your time and your wishes: fewer castles at a slower pace, more time in the wine country, or a detour to King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein across the Bavarian border.
Sleep in a castle
Where the route allows, we book your nights in castle hotels, so you can feel how it was to be prince or princess, and notice how these buildings were adapted to running water, heating and modern comfort. You will also see how life must have been before any of that existed.
How it works
- Private throughout: your own driver-guide and vehicle for the whole journey, up to 6 guests; larger groups in two vehicles.
- Your itinerary: tell us your dates, your pace and what you love, and we send a written day-by-day plan and quote within one working day.
- Entrances and hotels: castle entrances are paid on the spot or included in your quote, as you prefer; castle-hotel nights are quoted separately.
- Start and end anywhere: Salzburg is the natural start, but Vienna, Munich or Innsbruck work too.
Only have a day?
Our day tours cover the castles closest to Salzburg: the Werfen Ice Cave and Hohenwerfen Castle Tour, the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof Tour, Herrenchiemsee Palace, and the 2-Day King Ludwig Castle Tour. Reading first? See our guide to the castles of Salzburg and the story of Moosham Castle.
Austrian Castle Route FAQs
How many days does the Austrian Castle Route take?
Several. The full route as listed is best over about a week; a shorter version around Salzburg, Styria or the Tyrol fits three to four days. We adapt it to your schedule.
Are the castles open all year?
Most of the large ones are open from spring to autumn, with reduced winter hours; Hohensalzburg is open year-round. We check every opening time for your dates before we confirm the plan.
Can we stay in the castles?
In several of them, yes. Gabelhofen and other castle hotels along the route take guests; we book them for you as part of the itinerary.
What does it cost?
The price shown is for the proposed multi-day route per private vehicle for up to 6 guests, guide and vehicle included; entrances and hotels are quoted with your itinerary. A shorter route is priced accordingly.
Can we cancel?
Multi-day tours follow our multi-day terms: full refund up to 30 days before departure, 50% between 30 and 7 days, no refund inside 7 days. Hotel nights follow the hotels' own conditions.
We look forward to welcoming you to the castles and fortresses of Austria, where the stories are still standing.
