DAY 1 - MOUNTAINS & FAIRY TALES
Morning - Salzburg departure & Bad Tölz
Private pickup from your Salzburg hotel. We drive west into Bavaria, stopping in the spa town of Bad Tölz - an authentic, tourist-free Bavarian market town with painted facades and centuries of history. Your guide begins Ludwig's story: his lonely childhood, his obsession with medieval legend and Richard Wagner, and the impossible weight of royal duty.
Late Morning - Linderhof Palace
Nestled in a forested Alpine valley, Linderhof is the smallest of Ludwig's three palaces and the only one he lived to see completed. He modelled it on the private apartments at Versailles, filling it with a gilded dining table that rose from the kitchens below, a peacock throne, Hall of Mirrors, and an illuminated Venus Grotto carved from rock. Nearby, a Moorish Kiosk speaks of his love for the exotic. Your guide brings every room to life.
Afternoon - Oberammergau & Wieskirche
We pass through Oberammergau, the village of the world-famous Passion Play (performed every ten years since 1634), with its extraordinary painted building facades. Then on to the Wieskirche - a UNESCO-listed Rococo church rising improbably from an Alpine meadow, its interior a riot of gold, pastel and celestial light.
Late Afternoon - Neuschwanstein Castle
Perched on a forested crag above a gorge, Neuschwanstein needs no introduction, it is the most photographed building in Germany and the direct inspiration for the Disney castle. Your guide collects reserved timed tickets and leads you inside: rooms painted with the Nordic sagas Ludwig loved, gilded woodcarvings, hand-woven tapestries. Ludwig lived here for just 172 days before his mysterious death. We descend as the light turns golden.
Overnight: We recommend staying in the Füssen / Schwangau area (not included , we are happy to suggest hotels).

DAY 2 - THE ISLE OF KINGS
Morning - Drive to Lake Chiemsee
Your guide collects you from your overnight accommodation and we drive east to Bavaria's largest lake - the Chiemsee, known as the Bavarian Sea. The scenery shifts to rolling farmland and open water, with the Alps reflected on the surface.
Midday - Herrenchiemsee Palace
We board a traditional Bavarian ferry and cross to the Herreninsel the Island of the Lords. Here stands Herrenchiemsee, Ludwig's most grandiose vision: a copy and in many rooms an improvement of the Palace of Versailles, built on a remote island and never finished. The Hall of Mirrors here is longer than the original at Versailles, lit by 1,848 candles. The State Bedroom is smothered in gold and velvet. The unfinished rear of the palace stands in ghostly contrast a monument to a dream cut short.
The small King Ludwig II Museum houses his christening robe, writing desk, and death mask. Your guide weaves the threads of the whole two days together: the man behind the myth, his friendship with Wagner, the suspicious circumstances of his death.
Afternoon - Return to Salzburg
Boat back across the Chiemsee, then a scenic drive through Bavarian countryside and back into Austria. We drop you at your Salzburg hotel or any agreed onward destination (Munich, Innsbruck, etc.) by early evening.
Day 2 Stops
- Lake Chiemsee - Bavaria's largest lake
- Traditional boat crossing to Herreninsel
- Herrenchiemsee Palace - UNESCO World Heritage (entrance fee ~€12 pp incl. boat)
