Overview
The Eagle's Nest sits on a rock spur 1,834 metres above Berchtesgaden, thirty minutes from Salzburg and just across the Bavarian border. On this private day tour your driver-guide takes you from your Salzburg hotel to the Kehlsteinhaus, the Obersalzberg with its documentation centre and bunkers, the village of Berchtesgaden and the emerald water of Lake Königssee, and brings you back the same evening. €850 per private vehicle for up to 6 guests, about 8 hours, hotel pickup included.
What you see on the Eagle's Nest tour
- The Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus): the mountaintop tea house built in 1937 and 1938 as a 50th-birthday present for Hitler, who rarely used it. The road up, the tunnel into the rock and the original brass-lined lift are the engineering story; the 360-degree view over the Alps is the reason people come. Open from mid-May to the end of October, weather permitting.
- Obersalzberg and the Documentation Centre: the regime's second seat of power, where the Berghof and the party leaders' houses stood. The centre explains how the Nazi state worked and what it did, and gives access to part of the bunker system beneath the hill.
- Berchtesgaden: the market town below, with its painted façades, the royal palace and time for coffee.
- Lake Königssee or Hintersee: the fjord-like Königssee with its electric boats to St. Bartholomä, or the quieter Hintersee near Ramsau for the mountain reflections. Your choice, or both if the day allows.
- Optional: the Hallein salt mine on the Dürrnberg. Cross the old border underground, ride the miners' slides and take the boat across the salt lake. A good morning stop before the mountains, especially for families.
How the day runs
- 8:30 to 9:00: pickup at your Salzburg hotel and the short drive across the border.
- Morning: Obersalzberg: the Documentation Centre and the bunkers with your guide, then the shuttle bus up the Kehlstein road, the tunnel and the lift to the Eagle's Nest. Allow around two hours at the top.
- Midday: lunch at the Kehlsteinhaus terrace or down in Berchtesgaden.
- Afternoon: Lake Königssee, with a boat to St. Bartholomä if you like, or Hintersee and the Ramsau valley.
- Around 17:00: back in Salzburg.
In winter, or when the Kehlstein road is closed, the day becomes the Obersalzberg, the salt mine, Berchtesgaden and the lakes, and it is a fine day in the snow. Tell us your date and we tell you what is open.
Why see it with a private guide
- Context, not just the view: the Obersalzberg is one of the most misunderstood sites in Europe. Your guide gives you the history straight, without myth and without a script.
- No bus queues: we time the Kehlstein shuttle and the lift around the crowds and handle the tickets on the day.
- Your pace, your stops: a private vehicle for your group only, with photo stops wherever the mountains deserve them.
- Door to door: hotel pickup and return in Salzburg. Larger groups travel in two vehicles.

Eagle's Nest Tour FAQs
Is the Eagle's Nest in Austria or Germany?
Germany. It stands above Berchtesgaden in Bavaria, about 30 km from Salzburg. Bring your passport or ID card for the border, which is normally unstaffed.
When is the Eagle's Nest open?
From mid-May to the end of October, weather permitting; the road closes for snow. Outside those months the tour visits the Obersalzberg Documentation Centre, the salt mine, Berchtesgaden and the lakes instead.
Are the Eagle's Nest tickets included?
The Kehlstein shuttle bus and lift, the Documentation Centre, the salt mine and the Königssee boat are paid on the spot; your guide handles the queues and timings. Everything else, vehicle, guide, pickup and return, is in the price.
How long is the tour and what does it cost?
About 8 hours. €850 per private vehicle for up to 6 guests.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes. The lift and the views delight children; the salt-mine slides even more so. The Documentation Centre is best for teenagers and adults, and your guide adapts the depth of the history to your group.

What Client's Say?
Bernd was a truly amazing guide. He was on time and really flexible with our days plan due to inclement weather. He was wonderful with our children and careful about the way he shared information about WWII- so the kids wouldn't be frightened. He took us to 2 additional sights (summer tobagoning-which was awesome) and a Sound of Music detour. He also recommended a lovey restaurant that was off the beaten path with only locals and had amazing food. I highly recommend. He has a true wealth of knowledge.

Guest reviewMy girlfriends and I just returned from a wonderful trip to Austria. This was our first time visiting and it certainly won’t be our last. Our most memorable moment in Austria was our Salzburg tour. One of my co-workers visited Austria last year and recommended we use B(e)specialtours. What an excellent choice. We were fortunate to have an amazing tour guide who make the entire tour spectacular. We visited some of the most beautiful sites and our tour guide was so eloquent and informative and made everyone feel connected and captivated with the beauty of Salzburg. The mountains were lovely and we stopped to take some amazing photos. Our tour guide provided us with some great explanations, wonderful stories and a pleasant tour. Thanks for making our trip to Austria so memorable.

Guest reviewI am very aware that the tour operator cannot control the weather. Rain and overcast conditions hamper any sightseeing opportunities. That being said, we paid a lot of money (full fare) to see the outside of a lot of Salzburg’s sites. The salt mine tour was outstanding, but I feel we were rushed through, due to our driver needing to pick up her children from school. My advice, pay close attention to the weather before scheduling a tour of this type.

Guest reviewOur tour was terrific. Bernd was a wonderful tour guide. He took us literally off the beaten path. He was informative, serious, funny, and shared details beyond what was core to the tour. We never felt rushed and really enjoyed our full day experience. He was a safe driver and the van was super comfortable. We would highly recommend him.
