Overview
This Neuschwanstein tour from Salzburg is for travellers who want to see King Ludwig II's castles in one day without juggling trains, timed tickets and shuttle buses. Neuschwanstein sits near Füssen in the Bavarian Alps, about 2.5 hours from Salzburg. Your driver-guide takes the country roads, shows you Linderhof, the one palace Ludwig lived to see finished, and gets you to Neuschwanstein for your reserved time slot.
Good to know
- €1,350 for your private group of up to 6, a long full day of 8 to 9 hours or more.
- Neuschwanstein can only be seen inside on a guided tour with a timed ticket, and summer slots sell out days ahead. We reserve yours; the castle entrance and a €50 reservation service are paid on top. Linderhof entrance is paid on the spot.
- Walking: the path from the shuttle stop to the castle is steep, and the castle tour has stairs. Photography is not allowed inside.
- Bring your passport or ID card. Both castles are in Germany; the border is normally unstaffed.
- Advisor tip: send us your date as early as you can, especially for July to October, because the ticket slot sets the whole day.
Is this the right tour for you?
If five or more hours in the car sounds like too much, choose Herrenchiemsee, Ludwig's Versailles on Lake Chiemsee, about 40 minutes from Salzburg. If you want all three palaces without the rush, the 2-Day King Ludwig Castle Tour spreads them over two days. Planning on your own? Read Salzburg to Neuschwanstein: your guide.
Neuschwanstein Tour from Salzburg FAQs
How far is Neuschwanstein from Salzburg?
About 220 km, roughly 2.5 hours each way by car. We take the route through Bad Tölz, Ettal and Oberammergau, so the drive has stops worth making.
Is Neuschwanstein in Austria?
No. It is in Bavaria, Germany, a few kilometres from the Austrian border near Füssen.
Are castle tickets included?
We reserve your Neuschwanstein slot in advance. The entrance fee and the €50 reservation service are added to the tour price, and the Linderhof entrance is paid on the day.
Why visit Linderhof as well?
Linderhof is small and finished, so it shows you how Ludwig actually lived. Seeing it in the morning makes the unfinished Neuschwanstein in the afternoon make much more sense.
Can we cancel?
Yes. You get a full refund up to 72 hours before the tour, 50% between 72 and 24 hours, and no refund inside 24 hours. Reserved castle tickets follow the castle's own conditions.

Guest reviewWe had a great day with Bernd visiting the Neuschwanstein castle and surrounding area. He was fantastic in handling all of the logistics--making sure we had reserved tickets, parking, making sure we got to the castle in time for our (very prompt) tour, and was so patient in snapping photos of our family along the way. We would definitely recommend Bernd and this day trip to anyone.
